The hubby and I went to Puebla last Saturday afternoon. We arrived at 3:30 and had the run of the place. It was awesome, the opposite of the Bien Trucha chaos that can sometimes affect my time there. Unlike BT, Puebla stays open all day. By the time we left, the patio tables were full...we were alone inside the whole time. We opted for the Piña Guacamole. It was good. BT wins the guac race, but the bean dip and chips go to Puebla. We loved both. We didn't have a cocktail, but I do want to go back and try their creative margaritas for sure. We had water, and let me tell you, it was awesome water. Super cold, no ice needed...a very nice perk. So yes, we were sort of boring on this trip, our son was at a birthday party and we wanted to get in and get out, so it was water, guac and tacos. So let's get to the best part, the tacos! We ordered the carne and pescado. The carne are steak, and super tasty steak at that. They are topped with delicious caramelized onions, an avocado sauce and cheese. The pescado tacos were grilled Mahi Mahi, we were so impressed with them. They has a pico de gallo type topping and avocado. They were the best tacos I've ever had. We can't wait to go back and really enjoy Puebla...getting some sides and margaritas.

The décor has an openness and the feel of being trendy. The drink menu with tequila varieties lends to the trendiness. The food is bland. (The chili relleno was large and looked appetizing--bland!) This was also true of the appetizer of guacamole (no spice) and the flan (undistinguished). The waitress was attentive, assuring us our meal's delay was the languid kitchen. Come here again? No thanks!

I enjoyed a late weekday lunch at Puebla. It's an attractive, modern room with high ceilings and hard surfaces, so noise may be an issue for those seeking a conversation-friendly venue. The décor is sort of nueva Mexicana, and the lightness of the room shows it off to good effect. Since the place was nearly empty, service was quite attentive. The menu consists of upscale takes on traditional Mexican-style favorites. We enjoyed pineapple guacamole and deliciously fresh, crispy chips. Then we sampled tacos. Unfortunately, diners cannot mix tacos within an order of four -- they all have to be the same. The three of us solved that by ordering different tacos, then trading among ourselves. All were delicious: my favorite were the al pastor (a bit more picante than others I've had), followed by a shrimp special (tender, juicy camerones), with steak coming in third (good, but not very exciting). A side of elote Mexicano was sweet, though a bit bland. All the taco plates and the side were very nicely presented. For dessert, a chocolate brownie was tasty & indulgent. Because of the noise factor, I'm not sure I'd care for the ambiance if the place was busy. For an off-hours lunch, though, it was very nice, indeed. For quality of cooking, I'd compare Puebla favorably with Geneva's Bien Trucha; for ambiance, BT has more of a hipster vibe, while Puebla is a bit tonier. How nice that there are such good upscale Mexican places in the Fox Valley!

The restaurant was located in a good place in St Charles along the river; the ambiance was contemporary. Our server was super friendly. The food was fresh and well made; my drink was great! all of us liked our food. The chips they served in the beginning was bit oily - that will be my only complaint.

Wonderful vibe, delicious tacos (Al Pastor, Carne, and Estilo Baja), went at lunch so there were only two other groups eating (one being a couple) and I will definitely be coming back to eat again. Oh! And the chips were so perfectly cooked served with a yummy bean dip! Their service was a little slow for the amount of tables filled (3 out of at least 30) and we had to ask for more water and other drinks, plus chips without the server asking if we needed anything. Try it out!

This is my favorite restaurant in the St. Charles area! I have been here multiple times and have never had anything less than a fantastic time. The restaurant is beautiful inside and out, and the service is always excellent. Great for a formal or casual occasion. Puebla stands out because of their guac and margs. With guac flavors like pumpkin seed and marg flavors like strawberry basil and cucumber jalepeno, you will never get bored. Their tacos are also delicious, but here's your warning -- you will always leave in a food coma!

Definitely a spot to visit in Saint Charles!! Worth the drive and totally worth the value. Some friends suggested this place for dinner this weekend and not knowing much about it, I went with the crowd and made out way to this perfect dinner spot. First impression: spacious, clean, excellent lighting, great location, and the employees seemed to be on top of their game. When we arrived, we were a few minutes late so we found some margaritas already on our table our friends had ordered. Unfortunately, when I drink tequila, bad things seem to happen so after briefly browsing the menu, I went with a ginger ale and the hubby ordered a Mexican Sprite in the glass bottle. If you have had an America Sprite, you will know the difference!! Their house made chips were served with beans instead of salsa which I thought was a nice touch. I ordered a few salsas off the menu to try. 3 types for $5. I ordered the Salsa Verde, Habanero and Chile de Arbol. Not gonna lie, one was better than the next. I could have eaten all 3 and made a meal out of them! some of the best salsas are the ones you would never try. Take it from the Mexican that doesn't like spicy food all that much!! Their orders of tacos are about $10-$12 for four tacos. At first, I wanted to order the Al Pastor because this is the true test for a Mexican place as far as I'm concerned but after hearing about their specials, I changed my order to their taco of the day: barbacoa. They do not allow you to mix up your taco orders so you must get all 4 the same. You are best to find someone to order something else and trade some tacos to get a variety! Hubbs ordered the steak tacos with melted cheese and I chose the special Barbacoa taco dinner. Rice is not included but it did not interest me all that much. The 4 tacos are more than enough for one person. Service is where they lose a star. Our server was very nice and knew the menu items, FOR SURE!! However, we found ourselves quite often with empty drinks or water and even after finding our server and asking for this drink or that drink, he still took a while to produce a beverage. This seemed to be just how the night went for beginning to end. Otherwise, everything went well. The empty glasses issue needs to addressed but we will be back. The food and pricing was very appealing and I can't wait to go back to try the guacamole!!

This place is so good! I wish they would put one in downtown Naperville. The chips are delicious. The queso fundido was great (we added chorizo) Service was fantastic and the modern atmosphere is so inviting.

My friend and I had a lovely weekend lunch at Puebla last weekend. We went around 1 pm on a Saturday and it was fairly quiet. We were greeted immediately and seated in a booth (we were offered either booth or table). I had a delicious margarita to start- pineapple and had a nice peppery kick- loved it. I enjoyed the fish tacos which were perfectly cooked and seasoned and also had a lovely dessert in the warm brown sugar cake (which really looked more like a muffin- but still delicious). I thought the prices were comparable to other restaurants of the same caliber and I would definitely come back to try some of their other food in the future. Good food and good service with a nice ambiance- what more can you ask?

It's a shame that the food at this restaurant is so awful, as interior is nicely done (except for the fact that the floor was buckling and being held in place with some kind of tape...that was bizarre). Unfortunately, good looks can only take you so far, and that is certainly the case with Puebla. My girlfriend and I met here for dinner last week, and were surprised to see how uncrowded the restaurant was, even for a weeknight, though in hindsight, that probably should have been a sign. We ordered two cocktails, and I must say they were very nice, so if you're just coming for drinks, you might enjoy the place. We, however, were also ordering food, especially since chips and salsa did not come complimentary (really? A Mexican restaurant that doesn't give you free chips and salsa?). We ordered one of the rather expensive salsas, as well as the house guacamole. It was crystal clear that the guacamole was previously frozen - in fact, parts of it were still frozen when it hit the table! We left most of it untouched, something I do not think I have ever done at a Mexican restaurant. At the waiter's suggestion, I ordered the fish tacos, expecting crispy tilapia with fresh cilantro and avocado. What arrived instead were four slabs of fish (literally, the fish was cubed) without the slightest crispiness whatsoever. If there was fresh cilantro on those tacos it must have been invisible to the naked eye, as I certainly couldn't spot any. I left two of the tacos untouched as well. For a meal that cost each of us $46, my friend and I left very hungry and unhappy. I don't expect Puebla to last long.

This is my new favorite restaurant in St Charles! And now they are open on Mondays! I always get the elote guacamole and the carne tacos. Never been disappointed. Here's a tip I wish I knew the first time I went... The salsas are listed in order of spicyness. Yow! Accidentally ordered the spiciest salsa my first go around.

Reservations @730. Seated promptly. Waiter Joey (who is a hustler waiter/bartender) came by to take our drink and appetizer order. Cevice (awesome) came right out, with the awesome Jalapeño cucumber margaritas to follow. The salsa and chips were great. We had 3 different variety of tacos (chicken/pescado/portabella) all tasty and cooked to perfection. Your have to add the corn as a side. Good food, good service and great ambiance. Perfect Friday night.

Wish could give 3 stars, but the food is not up to it espoecially at these prices. Perhaps another visit and will try other things for an update. Cool place lots of natural light during the day, 5 rabbitt on tap . .very nice....Lots of cool tequillas .. . Mango habernero margarita is nothng special, all the fancy tequillas are ound and he makes from the well, I should of called one ,,, forgot wish the bartender would of asked. ..anyway no habernero flavor in the drink just kind of boring. Chips are good with a bean dip, tastes straight from can. Elote . .. really frozen corn not grilled at all with may and tajin, would of been of with roasted corn. Ceviche . .meh..not that good not that bad . .. just ok Anyway its frustraiting to have kind of a cool place with kind of boring food and drink quality . .. I would go to drink 5 rabbit on tap, get some chips salas and guac, maybe a called tequilla . .. but still wouldn't be cheap.

Service was extremely good from the minute we walked through the door. I think the upscale interior is as nice as there is in the St Charles/ Geneva area. Margaritas were excellent and we tried a few of the different varieties they offer. Loved the chips and bean dip. Shrimp tacos were as good as I've had, fresh and great tasting. I thought their prices were very reasonable as well. Been here twice and will definitely be back.

Nice atmosphere, good food (especially the guac). The service is pleasurable and polite, but portion sizes are small. There is a cozy little bar area inside as well. Nice area to walk by the river if season permits after dinner. A little overpriced for portion sizes, but definitely bold and unique in flavors of food. Has flare and is different than most Mexican joints.

I was sincerely disappointed with the service when I had lunch here. I had to haggle a persistent waiter to get hot sauce to put on my tacos - they clearly display hot sauce at their bloody mary bar, but adamantly refuse to serve it with food. They do not serve blended margaritas either. The alcohol menu is misleading in that the "5's" listed next to certain beers are not the price of the beverage but rather the "type" of beer - we were charged $8 for a flight of four beers that appeared to be priced at $5. We ordered two of these beer flights and the waiter completely forgot to deliver the second one - we eventually just canceled the order. Overall, the waiter had a very standoffish persona and that singlehandedly ruined my experience. The food was decent, but I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend.

Great spot in downtown St. Charlie. Love the floor to ceiling windows, bringing in a lot of natural light and connecting diners with those on the outside. Food is very good. I enjoy non-traditional items on any menu. The MUST HAVE on this one - ROASTED BRUSSEL SPROUTS w/CHORIZO, GARLIC & OLIVE OIL. The traditional guacamole is also awesome, but you better not mind chunks of avacado (I don't). Have had the tacos and flautas, both are nice eats. Definitely on the A-list!

Used to love this place until we came in for dinner tonight and were completely ignored! We were seated immediately since it wasn't very busy and sat in the booth for over 15 minutes with not one person giving us water or taking orders. We even asked the hostess if somebody was going to take care of us and she said yes and she would check on it. Nothing obviously came about from it because we had enough and walked out. So upset that we had a bad experience we loved this place! Will have to go somewhere else for our margaritas : /

My husband and I ate there for a late lunch We thought the food was quite good. Unfortunately, our server had major "Tude." Perhaps he was miffed that he had to act as both bartender and server. I asked for my margarita with no salt. It came salted. We had also asked for water with our drinks but water was not served until we got our meal after asking again. We ordered the pina guacamole but were served the poblano. I have no idea what his name is because he did not offer it. There was no "hi,welcome." When we asked for an outside table, he said there were a lot of bugs. He didn't offer to reseat us if the bugs became an issue. I suggested the reseating option and he smirked and said "well you don't see many people out there do you?" Let's just say no hospitality. He acted like he was doing us a favor. I didn't see anyone in the resistant who looked like he/she was a manager. Maybe it was the bartender! That would be a shame.

Love their take on modern Mexican cuisine!!!! Started with a traditional margarita that was divine. Even better was the second margarita made with a top shelf tequila!! They are way too delicious. Next up was the epazote guacamole....with the crispy tortilla chips. So easy to sit and eat this fresh creamy and picante dip all day. We did move on to tacos with a side of corn. Loved that I could order my shrimp tacos on lettuce leaves instead of tortillas. The flan and the Mexican chocolate ice cream were divine. Highly recommend this great little spot!!!!

Went here last Saturday with a friend, neither of us had tried this restaurant yet. It was fabulous! Chips and bean dip were served as soon as we sat down. We ordered three different types of salsa for $5, what a deal! For those who complained about the salsa not being free, I understand, but this is not your standard run of the mill salsa. We were happy to pay for the salsa to try such new flavors. Our waitress was great, the cocktails were outstanding, I had the Mango Habenero Margarita and I'm still dreaming about it...Anyway, the kitchen did mess up my friends order three times, we had a good laugh about it. Her meal was comped so can't complain. The food was so, so good. I had the chicken tinga with brussels sprouts, so yummy. Friend has chicken and portobella fajitas and the corn side dish. Overall, a great night out, we will be back!

First time here and the food is fantastic. Nice, comfortable ambiance. All food tasted very fresh and prepared with TLC. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken chorizo tacos (special of the day). Salsas were handmade and wonderful. Hoping this place stays around, wonderful addition to downtown STC dining scene.

Good place for Americanized Mexican. Had a large group so we ordered all taco selections and all were very good, well seasoned. If you are on low carb diet, you can have tacos on lettuce instead of corn tortillas. My favorite two were the carnitas and shrimp. Salsas were also good and they make own chips. Margaritas were ok. Nothing special about them.

I've been here a few times and I have very much enjoyed it. I've always been satisfied with my meal, and especially with the drinks! There prices are a little high, but I always do a great job of filling up on chips and thus taking three quarters of my meal home.

We love Puebla. This is upscale Mexican with a gourmet twist. Their homemade guacamoles and salsas are top rate. Be sure to try their habanero salsa which is spicy with a hint of sweetness. The service is always outstanding and the restaurant has a very open feel to it. For appetizers, try their superbly fresh and delicious ceviche! Also, for your sweet tooth, the flan serving is enormous, plenty to share!

It was my first visit to Puebla. The place is spacious, great service, friendly staff. The food was okay, nothing special. I hate to write anything remotely negative because as a St Charles resident, I want our restaurants to do well. I had the steak tacos and they were good. Guacamole was good. The Brussels sprouts lacked flavor. I hope you give this place a try and judge for yourself.

The so called "manager" of this place has 0 people skills and a very bad attitude! After waiting 10 minutes to be seated, another 10 for our drinks to arrive while only 4 other tables were filled in this place. Do not order the traditional margaritas which are basically ice, shittly salted to one side lime water! Served in a scoth glass claiming to have 2 ounces of liquor in them (guaranteed NO LIQUOR IN THEM) while the whole drink is 2 ounces. Itself for 10$!!! Total rip off!!! Besides the slow service and being conned of 10$ on lime water the "manager" did not get a name possibly Pueblo himself, chased us to the front door very unprofessional acting as though we did not pay pur bill! The food was not terrible but highly do not recommended this restaurant unless you want slow service, unspecified expensive water and a nasty manager/ waiter/ bartender/ crazy fool chasing you to the door!

We stopped in because the place looks good from the outside. 6pm on a Saturday so a handful of people in the place. We sat at the bar and tried a Margarita. The bartender talked us into a 17 dollar "best you have ever had" margarita. It was fine. But it was nothing special. It took so long to get a menu or a new drink we left. Not impressed. Will not be back. Poor management.

I really like this place. Started with the Tradicional guac (we LOVED it, super tasty) and the complimentary refried beanish type dip (super tasty). Enjoyed a Michelada with that which was exactly the flavoring I like with those so I was happy. Everyone else had Tradicional Margaritas and really enjoyed those (very refreshing). I had the fish tacos and the fish was perfectly tender and tacos very tasty. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and we all were very happy we gave it a shot. Honestly, just as good as Bien Trucha in my opinion. Give it a shot!

  • Brittany S.

The ambience is great! I have gone here several times and the Al Pastor tacos are my favorite! Salsas are super tasty especially the Verde. My only complaint is that the chips are greasy. Otherwise this is a regular date night spot for me and my husband.

Didn't really care for it. Went on a Saturday a few weeks ago around 5:30 and they were not busy at all. Service was slow throughout the whole time we were there. Margaritas were great, and so were the salsas. I had the raspberry serrano margarita and it was superb. So good I had 2. Had the guajillo, verde and morita salsas and they were all excellent; although the morita is very smoky so beware. For dinner I had chicken enchiladas en mole. I did not care for the mole. And yes, I know what mole is and how it's supposed to be. The biggest disappointment for me was the side of elote mexicano. I make this at home all the time and at a nice restaurant, for $7, I expected more than a can of corn with some crema on top. Seriously? No effort? Roast the corn and strip it off the cob for $7. I felt very slighted. Overall drinks and salsas were great, but that was it for me. And for a $10 margarita, I won't be back.

Went for lunch was very good. portions were suppose to be small but i feel they were big. wife had a tamale trio was very good. I had chicken tinga tacos was very good as well. started with traditional guacomole was great.Their complimentary chips n dip was a bean dip which was a nice change from the typical salsa dip. will be coming back asap

I liked it! Went at 6:30 PM on a Saturday and received attentive service. Small but solid menu--good consistency. Margaritas and beer selection are great. Loved all the pepper-infused tequila drinks. Get one of each. Chorizo bacon brussels sprouts! Order several taco entrees and share them. Nice flavor variety and good attention to detail. Paying for the salsas was appropriate because they were worth it. One of the highlights of the meal. I can imagine dropping by to snack on chips and ordering a few margaritas. Didn't go too far into the menu, but I'm willing to give it another shot to see if it is a destination-type place. Maybe more prominent specials.....?

Another stellar visit this afternoon. Steve continues to provide unbelievable service due in large part to the passion he has for his customers and developing the most interesting cocktails found anywhere. Their food has depth and layered flavors that make us want to come back, and Steve seals the deal with his focus on making a memorable experience each time we stop.

The food was outstanding! Great space - wonderful ambiance! Service was incredibly bad! Our waiter could barely acknowledge our table until it was time to bring the check! The wait staff appeared to be very young and terrifically poorly trained. When asked how much the daily taco dish was - our waiter said he didn't know maybe $12 or $13 dollars and then waited for the order. We had to ask for additional water and would have ordered a second round of drinks if asked but no one did. I will not rush back.

Went for lunch last week and had a mixed bag at best. The chips and bean dip were very nice. I like that they fry their own tortilla chips. They have craft beefs from 5 Rabbit. Would like to see some other craft brews in this upscale place but at least they had something. I ordered the Chicken Tortilla Soup and this was a great/interesting version. Slightly salty but not so much that I minded. The Chicken was fall apart tender. The broth was more like Vegetable Soup broth. All in all I liked it and if the rest of the food was on par with this I would be back. Next up I ordered the Puerco Y Mole. Cured Pork shoulder and Pork Belly w/ Mole Poblano. $21 What I received was a Torta with sliced pork that may or may not have had mole on it. Not sure what the mix up was but I was only charged $10. Maybe this is how they serve a lunch portion of this dish, but the menu makes no mention of this or any sandwich. The pork wasn't tender and worse yet my torta came with fries. This should be a criminal act in a Mexican Restaurant. Frozen fries with a Torta!!! Are you kidding me. Are there any Mexicans working here? If Fries itsthe best you can come up with as a side for a non-existant menu item then maybe its time to give up. Here is a tip... If you have a lunch menu or change menu items for lunch how about telling the guest before they order. My wife who wasn't with me called and asked my to drop off some food. So I tried to order her the Tamales. She only eats chicken and they wouldn't let me substitute out the 1 pork tamale in the Trio. Really this is just bad form. Are you so set in your ways that you won't let someone substitute out for dietary reasons. You will be out of business fast with this attitude. I wasn't asking for you to change the recipe. I settled on getting her the Chicken Flautas. 1 was so overcooked the chicken inside was hard. Once again are there any Mexican's working here? I wanted to love this restaurant but the experience was not good.

Ok..so many new Mexican / latin cusine restaurants have hit the Tri Cities area in the past few years, Ive been too all of them....this hands down is my favorite! Delicious variety of margaritas, love the complimentary bean dip and chips, guacomole is made fresh mins. before it arrives to the table. Steak tacos..omg..sooo great! Service is attentive and low key. Love it..I waited tables and there is a fine line between being ignored and rushing customers. Please get to Puebla Modern Mexican, the decor is eco/urban. sleek and clean.

Had a great experience at Puebla last night. The place was packed at prime time on a Saturday night, but lucked out to find a couple of seats at the bar. Ordered a couple drinks, they have great cocktails and the bartenders are very creative. The fish tacos are phenomenal, very fresh. Shrimp tacos are unlike any I've tried anywhere else, fantastic. Elotes is a must order side. By the way, the staff is great from the host stand to waitstaff to bartender, I've had great service each and overtime. Keep up the good work!

My husband and I LOVE Mexican food. We were very excited to try this new place. Unfortunately, we were so disappointed. First, the side order of corn was not sweet and was overlooked. Second, the mojito drink was bitter...too much mint. Third, the tilapia tacos were served on wilted lettuce so you couldn't even pick up the taco. Fourth, the Mexican cheesy rice was TOO salty. We really wanted to have a delicious meal but were completely disappointed. We won't be back.

I went here for a birthday dinner last weekend. The service was excellent, and our server was very accommodating for our group of about 12 people. The bean dip they give you and the salsa verde was very good. I ordered the pescado, however, which was very bland in my opinion. The flavors were boring. My friend ordered the puerco y mole, which was very tasty on the other hand. It seems like the food might be hit or miss. I don't live close enough to this restaurant to be back any time soon, but I'd say it's kinda mediocre.

Our first visit. - Group of 11 to celebrate daughters graduation this past Sunday. Ordered 3 salsas for $5 bucks. Delicious. The chips and bean dip were great too. Margaritas were on the small side, but very tasty! we tired the fish, chicken and steak tacos. Liked them all. the corn and rIce were amazing. The only thing Our group didn't care for we're the Brussels sprouts with chorizo. The food reminds me of Bien Trucha which I love. Our server was very attentive and the atmosphere is nice. Two thumbs up!!

My wife and I were looking for something out of the ordinary on Saturday night and didn't know where to go. Driving past Puebla, I suggested we give it a try and hope it's similar to Bien Trucha. We were very pleased with the place and happy to now have another option in the modern Mexican realm of dining. We started with a couple of their salsas at $2 apiece (chips come with it). We had the Chipotle and the Chile de Arbol Salsa. Both were excellent. The portions were small, but our waiter grabbed one of them and refilled it after it was finished, so perhaps refills are free? I didn't mind paying for the salsa. Most upper end Mexi joints are charging for it now anyway, including Bien Trucha and Lupitas. We tried the Poblano corn and the green rice appetizers and found them outstanding and decadent. I get the rice and corn apps at Bien Trucha without fail, and didn't find these to be any better or worse, in all honesty. The main difference was that the rice was a light green. Not sure why, but it tasted nice. Had the tacos Al Pastor. My wife had tacos with what looked like shrimp and avacados on them. She couldn't stop raving about them. Mine were good, but not great. I would rate the flavor of the Pastor tacos around a 6 or 7. My main objection to them was that the quality of the tortillas was such that while trying to eat the tacos, the tortillas tended to soak through and fall apart, so that I was eating a taco that was basically disintegrating in my hand while trying to eat it. My wife's taco shells held together just fine. Perhaps something in my tacos tended to soak more easily into the shell. I'd been drinking enough prior to visiting Puebla, so I had a Coke. My wife tried a mango margarita and said she loved it and would order it again soon. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and a more suburban than Bien Trucha which is a bit more upbeat/metro. The place is enormous and is done up in very high quality woods, tiles and fixtures. It has an overall very comfortable feeI. I loved the long bar and appreciated that there are a couple of flat screens in there for times when just in case there's a big game happening that you don't want to miss. We will most definitely be returning here...soon. I really liked it and give it a 4. My wife would probably be in the 4.5 to 5 star territory and she can't wait to tell all of her friends about it.

I love Puebla! The food is always delicious and the drinks are always great! Steve is my go-to bartender (because he's the best) but I think the entire staff is top notch. Keep up the good work ;)

I went to Puebla a week or so after it opened and I wasn't impressed. In the last month I have went twice and I must say "Good Work" to management. Food has been excellent, staff is knowledgeable and service is very good. The ambiance is, by my account, the trendiest in St. Charles and really adds to the experience. Very pleased with Puebla and would recommend to anyone. Thumbs up.

The service/price/quality/portion-size equation just doesn't work. I walked away feeling that my money wasn't a payment for a hearty quality meal or outstanding service as much as it was a contribution to the owner's cost for what must be outrageously high rent and build-out cost of the premium location in downtown St. Chuck. The place is one big hall with modern decor out of an ikea catalog. If Chipotle owned a full service restaurant, this is what it would look like. There are no partitions to drown noise or help keep private conversations private. We went for lunch and were one of three tables in the whole joint. Server was prompt but also a ginormous D-bag. I like spicy food so trying new salsas is something I look forward to...I asked the server to explain the difference between the various salsas so I could decide which one to purchase and he told me to read the menu. I asked if I could have a taste of the various salsas since the salsa sampler item on the menu would not cover all the selections available and he simply said no...that I would have to buy them all if I wanted to try them. I didn't...I just picked enough of them to fill the sampler quota and the rest will remain untried as I don't think I'll be going back to this place. Also ordered the traditional and the poblano guacamole. They were essentially the same except the poblano one had a few pieces of pepper in it...I expected more of a difference between the two. Guacamole was also cold....so it came out of a refrigerator and not from freshly smashed avocados at room temperature. It was adequate but barely...I've had better. The comparisons to Bien Trucha are apt....read my review of that establishment to see how I feel about this place too. The margaritas are a downright rip-off. I don't mind expensive drinks at a wannabe swanky place...but you pay upwards of $10 for a drink, you expect to taste liquor. They served me sour mix in a glass barely bigger than a shot glass. The portions sizes were adequate...I did not find myself needing a second helping of salsa or thinking that the food on my plate wasn't enough...I left with a full stomach. But there wasn't enough for a doggy-bag...and at the prices they charge, you really expect more food. The food tasted good and I would go back for it if the other issues weren't present. I suppose some would find it it odd that I am giving this restaurant one star even though I liked the food...but for me, the value of meal and the god-awful service just ruined the whole experience to the point where I wouldn't consider returning...and that, in my book, warrants a one star.

Only 4 stars because it's not in CA...awesome al pastor and margaritas. Can't find much good, spicy Mexican food in this area but Puebla is a good one. Steve is knowledgeable, friendly and helpful on our visits. Of course I'll be coming back.

Puebla has great food. There are several salsas that are different & delicious. The accompanying chips are crispy with just the right amount of salt. The guacamole was great too. The steak tacos and corn are better than bien truchas. I had the flautas which are large and had just a little spiciness. Yum! Service was excellent. Go for a nice atmosphere and great food & drinks.

The food was good, service was ok. Not much food for your money though. Maybe this is a good place to go with girlfriends for drinks who just want to nibble on small bites but honestly for the price id skip this place and go to bien trucha -good is much better!

We have only been here once but I have to say as far as Mexican food it would be the best we've had. And that includes being in Mexico on 5 different occasions. I had a traditional Margarita, it was very well made. My wife had a raspberry serano margarita and not only was it unique, it was awesome. It had a spicy kick as a finish. For starters we had mango guacamole, which I've never had but will certainly order again. I had the fish tacos which were extremely well balanced, tasty and included a tempura avocado. We also had chicken tinga tacos with bibb lettuce instead of tortillas. Again, well balanced and delicious. Dessert was flan but not your typical flan. This was served with some diced pineapple and some thin strips of cinnamon points. The ambience was good although the restaurant was not crowded and the service was exceptional. Our servers name was Dawn. I would recommend requesting her.

Delicious! We had jake peon salsa, poblano guacamole, flautas, tamale trio and quesadillas. Tamales were tasty but a bit dry. The quesadillas were awesome. Will be back!

People with the low ratings are wrong! Great service. Fun, friendly staff. Great food! Especially the pineapple guacamole and different salsas! Mmm mmm mmm! I will absolutely be coming back! Plus they had such a great welcome for my sister's birthday! Strong drinks too ;)

I am giving this place two stars based on how it compares to the 4 or more upscale Mexican restaurants in the fox valley. We dined at Puebla with a party of six on a Saturday. Service- slow and not well paced. It felt like they were slow to start and fast to get us out. This despite the fact that we were still ordering drinks. Drinks- margaritas were flavorful. That said they were mostly ice and not large. Food - guacamole was bland. Hot salsas were hot, but not complex or flavorful. Tacos either need more filling or smaller tortillas, but there was an apparent lack of substance (or flavor) in either the fish tacos or the spicy meat tacos. Desserts-kudos for carrying kimmers ice cream. (That was worth a star in your rating)

I love Modern Mex and this has been the least fav restaurant of mine. My shrimp tacos were raw and they did take them off the bill, but it ruined the whole meal for me. My friend had gotten the carne asada tacos and they were drenched in a sauce that was not tasty. The atmosphere is pretty, but acoustics are terrible. You can hear people on the other end of the restaurant. There are many Mexican restaurants in the area that are more then amazing. I will not be back.

Went here for the first time last night with friends. I preface this by saying I adore Mexican. Not chain Mexican. Authentic Mexican. Let's start at the beginning. Drinks: the waitress didn't know what chelada was. She also didn't know if they had Tecate as an option. Um.. What? Her response to my shock? 'The bartenders aren't Mexican.' Um...what? Apps: we ordered salsa and quac. The quac was borderline puréed. Which is a weird quality in a guacamole. Smooth, creamy guacamole sorta seems unnatural. Salsa was okay. Entrees: We ordered chorizo tacos (pretty good), pollo tacos (meh), steak tacos (good) and fish tacos (no go-now I can't wait to go to my fave fish taco place-Jalepeno Grille). Side dishes: we ordered a corn side (delicious) and a rice side (never received it). Overall: Atmosphere - good Food-Meh for the price. Wait staff-needs more training.

I felt I had to write a review myself after seeing so many negative reviews here. I went to Puebla this past Friday with a friend who was visiting from out of town. We had a great experience. Drinks - standard margarita = very good, Sweet & Smokey margarita = amazing! We also tried the avocado margarita which was very different. We weren't fans of it but it wasn't horrible. Salsa & Guac - We had the Chile de Arbol salsa and the Pablano guacamole. Both were great! Tacos - We tried the chicken tinga and tacos al pastor. The chicken tacos were very good but the al pastor was our favorite. The grilled pineapple added just enough sweetness and was just different enough to make it interesting without being weird. Sides - Elote = just OK, we had both had better; Papas fritas = nothing special. Our waitress was awesome! Very nice and helpful talking about the drinks and food items. The atmosphere is great. Very modern but still inviting. It's a great place and very well done. I've liked the style of the past 2 restaurants in this building. Hopefully Puebla will stay around for a while. I'll definitely be back!

In a nutshell - poor service, average food, nice atmosphere My wife, her friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon. There were three tables of customers and ten waiters sitting around talking. No one came up to us for ten minutes, I finally had to flag someone down. I can understand if it was busy, but the place was empty; most of the staff were literally standing by the bar talking. The menu is very limited. Meals are tacos or a few other things. We had the carne tacos and flautas; they were OK, nothing special. The fixed up the place from the last restaurant that was there, so the atmosphere was nice. There are enough over-priced Mexican, boutique restaurants is the area. These guys are going to have to do something special if they want to attract customers.

Delicious, if pricy, authentic Mexican food that seems to be turned down a little for American tongues (I don't like having my tongue burned off). You can order it spicier, but the flavor was amazing anyway. Absolutely delicious food, and great friendly service. The ONLY reason it doesn't get five stars from me is because a tiny serving of salsa is $3. Most Mexican restaurants give chips and salsa for free. But anyway, the main course was worth waiting for. Also because it's a little loud for my taste. The Avocado salsa (it's not guacamole, as far as I'm aware) is phenomenal!!!

Puebla Modern is the antidote to Bien Trucha. The food here is every bit as good; freshly prepared, beautifully executed, well thought out and consistent. The Chicken con Mole Poblano is as good as I've had anywhere else, and that's saying something. Imaginative Margaritas and a fantastic Tequila list make it a great place to try something new, something different. There is not a single Margarita I've had here that I wouldn't happily order again. The room itself is handsome and relaxed, as good for a quiet date as for a large group or party. And the staff is excellent- Go see Matt behind the bar most weekdays to see what I mean- friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and best of all, no attitude. So the next time you get bum rushed out of BT, or balk at the idea of paying $15. for a 4 oz. drink, try Puebla Modern; you'll more than likely discover your new go to place for Mexican in Saint Charles.

I have been to Puebla in St. Charles a total of four times in the last two weeks. This place has amazing food and drinks, making for the perfect date night spot. It is great to see another amazing Mexican restaurant find its way, especially one with space. I have had most of the margarita's and they are all delicious and unique; Raspberry Serrano being my favorite. The Guacamole is all amazing and fresh, with the Elote topping the list. The tacos here are amazing, and with four provide, plenty of food for your normal night out and for the price. The El Pastor, Carne, Estilo, and Pescado are amazing and fresh. Will continue to be back for the amazing food, great atmosphere, and fun drinks. This is a must visit when you are in St. Charles looking for good food.

100% terrible. On a Saturday night when a large restaurant is 1/4 full this should've given us a clue. No server greeted us for 20 minutes, food was cold upon arrival and was flavorless. $9 for a small bowl of guacamole is ridiculous and is not fresh and nothing special. The owners of NEO need to work on improving their pizza business instead of venturing of and buying a "Mexican" restaurant. Never will go again. Of you want really authentic Mexican than drive a bit further into Geneva to El Molcajete.

This place was amazing!!!! Great food. As good as bien trucha. Margaritas are yummy!! And the price is not bad at all. I recommend this place for higher end Mexican food and great atmosphere. Go try it!

We were so happy to try this new restaraunt. What a disappointment! The margaritas were very smooth, but way too much ice, so you are already angry before the first appetizer! Then, I've never seen queso served in such a small amount! Next we tried the tacos...BORING! And really, you can't adjust the serving for a party of 6? Sorry, back to Geneva for us!

I love Mexican food of any type but this place just didn't hit the spot. They advertise both modern and authentic Mexican food. Sorry, but you just can't try and do it both ways and succeed. The chips were light and crispy, but greasy. Having to pay $5 for three small salsa tastings was not worth it. Others in my group ordered tacos, and they were delicious, but very small. I ordered Enchiladas figuring it was a safe bet. Wrong! What I got was three (maybe 4?) small soft shells, folded in half, with cubed pork, green sauce and crema on top. There was a lot of sauce, and very little meat. The folded tortillas on the bottom were worthless. The meat should be a filling in an enchilada, here it was a sparse topping. This was an appetizer at best, and while it was a spin on an enchilada, it wasn't anywhere near an entree. Our bill for 4 of us came to well over $100 and we all left hungry and unsatisfied. This location has turned over a few times already, I don't expect Puebla to be around long either.

Went to Puebla Modern Mexican in St Charles last night with my honey and we loved it! The raspberry serrano margarita was the best margarita I've ever had and I think I'm craving the corn guacamole....already! We ordered 3 different salsas, flautas, tortilla soup, steak tacos, fish tacos, and we had flan for dessert. Plus the atmosphere was great with beautiful dark wood with pops of yellow! Also, dark enough lighting to make me feel like I was out for an adult night (away from the kids) but very comfortable!

They seem to be trying to be Bien Trucha but they are not even close. The restaurant is much bigger and a little quieter but the food just isn't very good. I ordered chicken tinga tacos but sent them back. Tinga is supposed to be cooked with chipotle peppers but those just tasted like they had a tomato sauce. I tried the habanero mango salsa but there just was no heat at all, mostly just mango puree. I tried some of the green rice my boyfriend had with his steak but it tasted like the stuff you get from a box and his $21 steak only had a soy sauce and lime marinade. I had really hoped it would be good food with exciting spices and flavors with at least the option of spicy heat, but it it was pretty bland. I asked for some hot sauce and they brought my a dish of Cholula. If I wanted Cholula, if eat at the taco truck or at home. I hate giving places bad reviews but the food was very disappointing.

Delicious Authentic, and Fancy, Mexican cuisine. Had the carne tacos. The steak was perfectly seasoned and the juiciest steak I have ever had, and I have had a lot of beef in my life. Service was great, and even though I am not 21, the Bloody Mary bar had everything you could think of from bacon to olives to 6 kinds of peppers.(warning: it's only on Sunday and saturday). My bro had the chicken quesadillas. They were amazing as well. The chicken had this sweet, tangy flavor, sort of like honey chicken. It was weird, but good. WARNING: DO NOT GET ENCHILADAS. They were extremely hot (not spicy, but hot) and were served in an iron skillet. If u value your mouth, do not put these in your mouth, they will burn your face off. Salsas are a la carte, $2 each, free refills, and they are worth it. Salsas had amazing flavor and were very fresh. ANOTHER WARNING: DO NOT GET GUACMOLE. Guac Is over salted and not fresh at all. Verdict- amazing tacos, salsa, and service.

I love this place. My boyfriend and I went here on a Friday night for the first time. We were seated right away in one of their spacious booths. I recommend the booth for that romantic flare. The atmosphere is unique and refreshing. The waiter was friendly and checked on us to make sure everything was perfect. The food was excellent and the drinks were amazing. The Raspberry Serrano margarita was like nothing I've ever tried before. It was a little sweet with a spicy kick, a truly surprising combination in a drink that works! The Chicken Tinga was full of flavor and the Estilo Baja a tasty fish taco. The chips were hot and salsas delicious. You must try at least three. I highly recommend this place for a night out with the girls or a romantic date with your significant other. I'm looking forward to our next dinner experience there.

I really want to like this place. The Tacos al Pastor were incredible. But that was about it. Like many other reviews, the waitstaff just stands at the bar chatting and trying out new drinks. It appeared to be an owner participating as well. Seems like any drink training should take place outside of service hours. Also only about 3 tables full when we went in. Guacamole was terrible. Chipotle does a better job and tastes fresher. Salsa verde was ok. Not worth the extra cost. Who pays for chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant? Steak tacos were chewy, and not in a flavorful way. They need to offer some combo platters of tacos. When eating there for the first time, I didn't want to spend 12$ on 4 of the same taco, that I may not like. Very limited menu. Specialty salsas shouldn't take up so much of the menu. Please make it more foodie friendly! Appreciate the quality of the attempts but it's no fun to hang out and eaves drop on the waitstaff.

Great concept, great for the area I suppose, BUT.... SERVICE IS HORRIBLE during brunch! I hope dinner hour is better. Food is so so (quality, concept, taste). Our food came out cold/room temperature! Our server NOT knowledgeble. He kept disappearing. Did not ask if we wanted refills on our drinks. Left out of there with a bad taste of the place.

We really enjoyed our time here. We met up with friends and started with guacamole. It was a little bland but not bad. The tacos are very flavorful and there a quite a few choices. The drinks were strong and they should be because a small margarita is about 10 dollars. We will probably be back.

Smoky sweet is my favorite margarita anywhere now...mango/blueberry/habanero. The chile de arbol salsa had too much lime juice in it last night. I was surprised at the size of the scallops in the $23 main course...they are bay vs. sea & that's important! They weren't seared/caramelized...just all one color throughout.

It was our first time here so we sampled quite a few things but none were extraordinary... worst part was it took 45 minutes to get our food and it wasnt even that busy!!!? The chips seemed out of a bag, the bean dip from a can, the guacamole with the corn was actually pretty good, but we tried 3 different tacos (beef, chicken, and shrimp) and though we all had different tastes and preferred a different one over the other, none were so impressive that we would crave coming back. We also had an order of the Mahi Mahi and it wasn't good at all. The traditional margarita was really tasty but the skinny version wasn't as good. Overall, I guess we're just too spoiled by Bien Trucha or A Toda Madre in Geneva and this place is trying too hard to be them but unfortunately falling short.

Have been there twice now. Great atmosphere, and really good food! Ordered the steak tacos (love the Bibb lettuce, too!) and the side of corn (Elote Mexicano) that has a great sauce. Their queso fundido (with shrimp) is excellent. I'm not a margarita fan, but had the watermelon ones and they were good too! Definitely a great place for a date night or with a group. Our server was friendly and quick. Best Mexican restaurant I've been to!

This is a little gem of mexican food in down town Saint Charles. You don't really need to worry about parking because it is right next to a parking garage. But I didn't have to worry about parking my car, I walked there. The restaurant itself was a clean line and had a modern flare. The lighting was dim, but you got a lot of natural light coming in. Our waitress was very nice and she was very attentive. I was a Wednesday night, so the restaurant wasn't that busy. The dinner menu has a small selection but I'm okay with that. Also, brush up on your Spanish most of the food titles are in Spanish. To start I ordered Mango Guacamole, which serves 2 - 3 people. It was really fresh tasting and had a nice creamy consistency that I look for. Also, they bring you freshly made chips, which very delicious. My main course was Chile Relleno (stuffed poblano pepper). This had very bold and authentic mexican flavors, but the portion was small for the price. Everyone that I was with, their meal portion did appear small. Then we all order dessert, we all go the same thing, Churros. Also tasted very fresh and they are very filling. This was a successful restaurant and I will return.

We had to try it but won't go back. The food was ok but nothing compared to Altiro in Geneva. Why spend $ on ok food when you can go down the road and have great Latin Fusion at Altiro!!

My wife and I went here for the first time after hearing "not so positive" reviews from friends. We wanted to make up our own minds. We started out with the chips & Guacamole and after a few bites thought, "Uh oh"! The salsa verde was another non-event with little flavor. We ordered two taco dishes and were very disappointed as there just wasn't any flavor. My wife ordered a glass of wine and we were immediately surprised at the small amount in the glass. Unless drastic changes are made quickly, we would not recommend the restaurant. Unfortunately, our friends were right!

I hope this will help Puebla. They have a beautiful establishment in a lovely location, but the food and service is rather poor. The flautas had crisp tortillas, but the filling was very bland and unseasoned, as were the toppings. For $10 for 3 flautas, I'd expect something better than what I could find in the freezer section of the grocery store. Sadly, the service is lacking as well. We were there in the late afternoon on a weekend, and there were numerous waitstaff chatting with one another and basically ignoring the few customers who were there. I can understand this when a restaurant is busy, but when the waitstaff outnumbers the patrons, that's not acceptable.

Came here Saturday 11/2 for dinner with the wife. Positives I really like the space they are in and the décor and vibe is contemporary and relaxed. The food was good, and came out quickly. The Skirt Steak may have been the best I have ever had. They also have Modelo on draft which is one of my favorites. Negatives. My wife wanted Strawberry or some other fruit muddled type, they can't make that, so we both ordered traditional lime margaritas. About 10 minutes later we put in an appetizer order...still no drinks. 5 minutes later appetizer comes to our table and still no drinks. finally a full 20 minutes after we order the drinks arrive. They are SMALL rocks glasses overflowing with ICE and about 3 sips of liquid for $9. Their POS system needs work, because all of the drink orders were going to one bartender while the other bartender stood and watched, and they hand shake every margarita (which is great) but one guy can't make 20 margaritas at the same time! OK I learned my lesson and ordered a beer after my 3 sips of margarita because I didn't want to wait another 20 minutes. Well I waited 15 minutes for the beer because they have no triage or expediting, the beer order simply sat behind 15 hand shaken margaritas even though the other bartender could have poured it in 30 seconds. The scary part is that the restaurant was only half full. Needless to say there were a lot of customers mumbling and complaining to their servers about not getting their drinks for 20 minutes. A young man I believe to be the owner was literally walking around with his nose in the air and seemed indifferent to the whole situation. He never stopped by asked how things were...nada. The wait staff walked around with the look of a beaten down child. No smiles little communication, and zero knowledge of the menu. To top it off they try to nickel and dime you to death. No chips are served unless you buy one of their salsas for $2 which comes in a little tasting size portion. So if you want to sample 3 different salsas it's $6. Queso Fundido is $7 which is reasonable but if you want to add Chorizo it's $3 more WTF how about it comes with it and you stop nickel and diming. Like I said overall the food was good, but overpriced and the 3 sip Margaritas are a joke. I have no problem dropping coin for dinner but I spent $120 and felt like I was ripped off! There are too many other choices in the area where they at least act like they want my business. Oh the last thing. The Skirt Steak like I said was amazing, but the beans and rice it came with were absolutely horrible, come up with a new side (maybe Mexican potatoes) cause you are ruining a great steak.

We had a great experience at Puebla. They ran very smoothly for it being opening night. There is still some growing that the places needs. BUT, The place had good music an nice atmosphere. Lots of TVs big bar. The restaurant had a very basic menu. We had salsa and guacamole both were great. Margaritas were good. Next time will order one of their flights. When the food came out I was a little worried that portions were really small. I can eat a good amount of food. But I am completely full and my dinner was excellent. I was with a group of 6 and we all order different things ranging from carne asada, pork tacos, shrimp tacos, ect. Everyone loved their food. We ended with the churros. Really good over all experience. Will be back!!

A really pleasant surprise. The decor is clean, open and airy. Service was excellent. Salsa and mango guac were outstanding. I agree with other reviewers that it would have been nice to make the salsa complementary, but i think it was only 2 bucks. Fish tacos and carne Tacos were very good, esp the carne. Fish was more on the crunchy side and may have benefited from a little creamy chipotle mayo. But overall, excellent - will return.

OK Mexican, but for the price there are far better options in the area. 3 people for lunch with no drinks was over $60. We did order both guac and salsa to share, but they weren't worth the extra $20 total on the bill. Probably won't be back unless someone else is paying!

Reading a few less than positive reviews, a friend wanted to try the place. As it turned out I am glad I went. We went for lunch on a Thursday. The place has plenty of natural light streaming through the windows. The service was just right, not over bearing and they left us alone to talk. The food was wonderful. I had the carne taco's which were suburb. My friend had the Shrimp taco's which also was good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
